A Brief History of the Watchtower Society

Jesus Christ said, “I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18).  No promise was given to build a society or an organisation.  The New Testament records the establishment of churches led by pastors – not societies led by Presidents as we see with the Watchtower Society.

The movement was founded by Charles Taze Russell.

Russell was born in 1852 and grew up in Pennsylvania, USA.  At 25 he was manager of men’s furnishing stores. At an early age he rejected the doctrine of eternal punishment and, as a result, entered into a long career of denunciation of “organised religion.” At 18, he organised a Bible study class (1870) and in 1879 he founded The Herald of the Morning, which developed into what is today called The Watchtower announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. 6000 initial issues now grown to over 17 million.

Awake has over 15 million.  He drew ideas from Seventh Day Adventism & Christadelphianism.  Through door-to-door proselytising, they have grown to about 3.9 million members in 1991.   This last book The Finished Mystery caused a split in the organisation.  The larger group followed the next leader J. F. Rutherford and became the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the smaller “The Dawn Bible Students Association.”  In 1908 the headquarters of the movement moved to New York and set-up up a large printing press to propagate their teachings.  Russell continued teaching till his death in 1916.

Charles Russell’s character does him no favours.  Many have trusted their eternal destinies to a man who had no moral authority to be such a leader.  It is interesting to note that Russell held 990 out of the 1000 shares that existed in the holding company of the organisation.  He began to sell a product called “Miracle Wheat” and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper wrote an article exposing the false claims of his product.  He took them to court and lost.  The Eagle declared that Russell’s religious cult was nothing more than a moneymaking scheme (see I Tim. 6:10).  He began to make world-tours and would print his sermons in newspapers around the world.  His paid advertisements would include accounts of enthusiastic greetings at the various places he visited.  In many cases, the sermons were never delivered in the places claimed.  The Brooklyn Eagle began to expose him and his fraudulent claims with documented evidence of lies that he told about his tours.

In 1912 Pastor J Ross of James St. Baptist church in Ontario published a pamphlet called, “Some facts about the Self-Styled “Pastor” Charles Russell.  He minced no words in his denunciation of Russell, his qualifications as a minister, and his moral example.  Russell took him to court and tried to prove that it wasn’t true.  But he lost the case and was shown to be a perjurer in court as he lied and the transcripts of the court case still remain.

Charles Russell was an egotist.  He claimed that his writings were essential to understanding the Bible properly.  In 1910, September edition of the Watchtower he claimed:  “People cannot see the divine plan in studying the Bible by itself.  If a person lays aside his writings and studies the Bible alone, he will go into darkness after two years.  But if a person had not read a page of the Bible but merely read his Scripture Studies he would have the light of the Scriptures.”  This is arrogant at the least, and blasphemous at the worst.

Upon Russell’s death the helm of leadership was manned by Joseph Franklin Rutherford who also attacked the doctrine of “organised religion” with unparalleled vigour.  It is interesting to note that there was truth at the basis of their attacks.  The devil always builds his lies on the basis of truth to make his deception more subtle.

There was a split in the organisation and Rutherford actually denounced some of Russell’s teaching.  He wrote a pamphlet in which he declared that he was the mouthpiece for Jehovah for this age.  The organisation now seems to deny any theological connection with their founder and first president of the Society.   They hate to be called Russellites as they were once known, yet they continue to follow his teachings.  Since 1970 a million JW’s resigned or were disfellowshipped.

The Society is ruled by 12 men, headed by a president who rules for life.  The presidents have been:

·       Charles Russell (1874 – 1916)

·       Joseph Rutherford (1916-1942)

·       Nanthan Knorr (1942-1977)

·       Fred Franz (1977-1992)

·       Milton Henschel (1992 -  )

Fred Franz’s nephew Raymond Franz left the organisation and wrote a book called ‘Crisis of Conscience’ exposing the group as having:  Anti-biblical teachings, Given false prophecies, Changed teachings and policies, Lied and covered up and destroyed many members lives.

The Name “Jehovah”

Jehovah Witnesses insist that they are God’s true organisation because they use God’s “real” name.  They even go so far to insist that the proper use of God’s ‘correct’ name (Jehovah) is absolutely essential to one’s salvation. They quote from their NWT (New World Translation):  ‘Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.’  Romans 10:13 (NWT).  Jehovah's Witnesses believe that because they are the only group who refer to God by His ‘true’ name, Jehovah, they are the only true followers of God.

To make this claim they also insist that the New Testament manuscripts were changed and references to Jehovah were removed.  On page 10,11 of the 1985 Kingdom Interlinear Transaltion (KIT), under the heading ‘Restoring the Divine Name, Jehovah’ we read: ‘the evidence is that the original text of the Christian Greek Scriptures has been tampered with…Sometime during the second or third centuries CE, the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) was eliminated from the Greek texts by copyists… Instead of YHWH they substituted the words Kurios (‘Lord’) and Theos (‘God’).’

One may ask what “evidence“ is there for such a claim and where is the proof?  The fact is, this is a blatant lie. There is no historical or manuscript evidence (or evidence of protest) to support this claim. Somebody would have protested such a change. No one did. It never happened.

Their claim that we must use “Jehovah” is false for these reasons:

14.       Jesus never addressed the Father as Jehovah in the New Testament. Ask: Since Jesus never in the NT addressed the Father as Jehovah, why should we?

Jesus taught us to pray to God as ‘Our Father’, not ‘Our Jehovah’ (Matthew 6:9).  Jesus always addressed God as Father in His own prayers (see Matthew 11:25, 26:39,42).   Paul said, ‘we cry, Abba, Father’ (Romans 8:15).  If Jesus, the Holy Spirit and Paul all address God as Father nine times (and never as Jehovah) then shouldn’t we call God ‘Father’?

The New Testament tells us to name the name of Jesus Christ, not the name of Jehovah. Consider these examples:

·        ‘Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.’ (II Timothy 2:19)

·        ‘I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ . . .’ (I Cor 1:10)

·        ‘Ye are washed,....sanctified,... justified in the name of the Lord Jesus ’ (I Cor 6:11)

·        ‘Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.’ (Col 3:17)

·        ‘That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you....’ (II Thess 1:12).

Not only that, but the New Testament always lifts up Jesus Christ’s name.

·        In whose name should we meet together? ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.’ (Matthew 18:20)

·        Demons were cast out by the authority of whose name?  ‘Paul.....said to the Spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ (Acts 16:18)

·        In whose name should we preach repentance and forgiveness of sins?   ‘And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations. And ye are witnesses of these things.’ (Luke 24:47,48)

·        In whose name are we to believe and receive forgiveness of sins?  ‘....through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.’ (Acts 10:43, John 1:12)

·        By whose name, and no other, do we obtain salvation?   Acts 4:10,12 says: ‘by the name of Jesus Christ ... Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.’

·        Whose name is above every name?   ‘God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is  above every name .... that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ (Phil 2:9-11)

Clearly to insist that Jehovah is the name that the Bible exalts is false.  God has many names in Exodus 34:14 we read,  “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:”

Changing The Bible

The Jehovah's Witnesses have always held to the damnable heresy that Jesus Chris is a created being and therefore, not God.  To substantiate this belief, however, they have had to manipulate the Bible in dozens of places.  The Scriptures clearly teach Jesus Christ is God in human flesh.  The name given to him at birth was “Emmanuel” which means “God with us.”

In the following examples, note how the Watchtower has changed the Bible to prove their own doctrines:  (KJV refers to the King James Bible, NWT refers to the New World Translation that was written by the Watchtower).

Colossians 1:16-17

KJV – “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

NWT – “Because by means of him all [other] things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they be thrones or lordships or governments or authorities.  All [other] things have been created through him and for him.  17 Also he is before all [other] things and by means of him all [other] things were made to exist.”

Notice the word “other” in the NWT.  Why is this word  inserted four times when it is not in any New Testament Greek manuscript?   The NWT makes it appear that Jesus was created first, and then He was used by Jehovah to create all other things in the Universe.  By adding ‘other’ they change the meaning of the text from Christ being the Creator, to being a created being on a par with all other created things.

The Watchtower says that Christ played a junior role in creation since I Cor. 8:6 says that God made the world by or through Christ.  However, Isaiah 44:24 states,  “I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens ALONE, that spreadeth abroad the earth by MYSELF’.  All things were created for Christ (Colossians 1:16), means that Christ is the end for which all things exist. All things are to serve His will and contribute to His glory.

Christ is said to be the sole Creator in John 1:3, “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.”  You could not get any clearer than that.

Zechariah 12:10, “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son...”

Jehovah is speaking in Zechariah 12:1-10 of Christ’s return, Israel’s conversion, and Israel looking on Me (Jehovah) whom they (Israel) have pierced. We all know that Israel have pierced Jesus Christ.  Yet Jehovah said that they pierced “me.”  This makes Jesus Christ to be God and so the  Jehovah's Witnesses have deliberately altered the text and changed the Bible from ‘Me’ to ‘the One’ with no manuscript support. Hence, in the NWT it is not Jehovah who was pierced but the One (Jesus) who was pierced. They break the connection between Jehovah and Jesus.

Acts 20:28

KJV

“Feed the church of God, which he has purchased with his own blood.”

NWT

To  shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own [Son]”

The NWT has here adding the word [Son], which makes it appear that the church was purchased NOT by God’s blood (which would make Jesus equal to God), but by the Son’s blood.  Why does the NWT add the word ‘Son’ in this verse when ‘Son’ is not found in any Greek manuscripts in the world?

Hebrews 1:6

“And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.”

Why did the Watchtower change ‘worship him’ in the 1961 edition of the NWT, to ‘do obeisance to him’ in the 1971 edition?    The word for ‘worship’ in Greek is (‘proskuneo’). When one is much inferior, he fell upon his knees and touched his forehead to the ground before his superior, or prostrated himself, throwing kisses to his superior. It means to kiss, like a dog licking his masters hand; to prostrate; to worship.

If Christ is to be reverenced as a created being, as the Watchtower claims, then surely He would not be worshipped.  But the New Testament uses (proskuneo) as worship to God and (proskuneo) as worship to Christ. This shows that Christ is worshipped as God.  Why does the NWT translate proskuneo as ‘worship’ when it applies to God, angels, devils, the antichrist and images but when ‘proskuneo’ is used for worshipping Christ as God, they translate it as ‘do obeisance’?  If the NWT is correct in saying that Jesus is a created being and is not to be worshipped, then the Father Himself is guilty of committing a horrible sin by commanding all the angels of God (in Hebrews 1:6) to commit a sacrilegious act in worshipping a mere creature.

If the NWT is correct in saying that Jesus is Michael the Archangel, then why would God command the angels to worship a fellow created angel (in Hebrews 1:6)?    God has clearly stated that worship is to be directed to God alone.

1.         ‘Thou shalt worship no other god.’  Exodus 34:14

2.         ‘Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God.’  Matthew 4:10

3.         In the NT, angels are clearly shown to reject worship.

If angels refused worship when it was offered, why did Christ accept worship 16 times? By accepting worship, He claimed to be God.

John 1:1

There is no definite article (the) before the second occurrence of ‘God’.  The Watchtower claims (falsely) that when a singular predicate noun has no definite article, and it occurs before a verb, then it points to a quality about someone, so that here it says that Jesus (the Word) has a divine quality, but is not God Almighty.

Jehovah's Witnesses claim that because the second ‘theos’ has no definite article, we should translate it as ‘a god’. Then why has the NWT, a  Jehovah's Witnesses  version broken their own rule four times in John 1:6, 12, 13,

1.         John 1:6,  "There was a man sent from God, whose name was John."

2.         John 1:12,  "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God”

3.         John 1:13,  "Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

Jehovah's Witnesses say that Jesus is ‘a god’. But Jehovah disagrees with them in Isaiah 44:8 by saying:  ‘Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.’ (KJV and NWT).

JWs say that Jesus is ‘a god’ with Jehovah, as seen from ‘the Word was with God.’ They say that if Christ is ‘with’ God, He cannot be God.

1.         ‘There are no gods together with me’. (Deut 32:39 NWT)

2.         ‘There is no god with me.’ (Deuteronomy 32:39 KJV)

3.         Hence, Jehovah says that there are no gods with Jehovah, so Christ must be     Jehovah God.

All other gods are false gods – “and that there is none other God but one.” (I Cor 8:4).  Church writers writing before 325 AD all agree that John 1:1 is ‘the Word was God’, and that it means that Jesus is fully God and man. This verse was never disputed before 1937.

Notice 12 Church writers before 325 AD who all quote John 1:1 correctly as ‘the Word was God’.  Why do none of them quote it as ‘a god’?  These early Church writers knew Greek as their mother tongue and first language and were often quoting from the original autographs.

Isaiah 9:6

“His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”

The Jehovah's Witnesses  concede that Jesus is a ‘mighty God’, but they are adamant that He is not Almighty God as Jehovah is. They think that Christ is one of lesser gods.

However, the Bible shows that both Jesus and Jehovah are called ‘Mighty God’. Jehovah is called ‘Mighty God’ in:

·                ‘The remnant of Israel . . . shall stay upon Jehovah, the remnant of Jacob shall return . .  unto the mighty God ’.  (Isaiah 10:20,21).

·                ‘the Great, the Mighty God, Jehovah of hosts, is his name’. (Jeremiah 32:18).

There is only one Mighty God in heaven:

·                ‘I am the first and I am the last; beside me there is no God’. (Isaiah 44:6b)

·                ‘Is there a God  besides Me? Yea, there is no God; I know not any’ (Isaiah 44:8b).

·                ‘I am the LORD , and there is none else, there is no God beside me’ (Isaiah 45:5a).

I.  JESUS IS CALLED GOD

Notice the following Scriptures where Jesus Christ is called God:

¨              ‘Our Lord Jesus Christ…who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto’ (I Tim 6:14-16)

¨              ‘The Word was God.’ (John 1:1)

¨              ‘of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ’ (Titus 2:13)

¨              ‘the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ’. (II Peter 1:1)

¨              ‘if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins.’ (John 8:24)

¨              ‘Before Abraham was, I am.’ (John 8:58)

¨              God was manifest in the flesh’. (I Timothy 3:16)

¨              ‘Thomas said unto him, My Lord and My God’. (John 20:28)

¨              ‘in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.’ (Colossians 2:9)

¨              ‘unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God is forever.’ (Hebrews 1:8)

¨              ‘in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.’ (I John 5:20)

¨              ‘feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.’ (Acts 20:28)

And if that is not enough to convince an open minded person Who He really is then consider the blasphemy that He would have been guilty of if He were not God by saying the following:

Þ             John 14:9,  "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?"

Þ             John 5:23,  "That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."

II.  WATCHTOWER FALSE PROPHECIES

The real problem is religious authority.  The average  Jehovah's Witness thinks that all religious questions are solved in Brooklyn, NY and nowhere else can truth be found. Jehovah's Witnesses look unquestioningly to the Watchtower Society just as Roman Catholics looked to the Pope and the Vatican for truth.

To a Jehovah's Witnesses the Bible has no real authority, except as correctly interpreted by the Watchtower. Jehovah's Witnesses are trained not to trust themselves or others to interpret the Bible, only the Watchtower.  If a  Jehovah's Witnesses is refuted by Bible arguments which he cannot answer, he will often just contact the Watchtower and they will give him their answers.

However, nobody should trust the Watchtower Society.  Why?  Because it has clearly proven itself to be a false prophet.  This can be easily seen in the following:

The Bible states that a true prophet of God will give prophecies that will come true 100% of the time (Deuteronomy 18:20-22; Matthew 7:15-20).   A false prophet will give prophecies that fail to come true.

The Watchtower claims to be God’s inspired prophet who gives prophecies under angelic direction.  Notice their own claim:

This ‘prophet’ was not one man, but was a body of men and women. It was the small group of footstep followers of Jesus Christ, known at that time as International Bible Students. Today they are known as Jehovah’s Christian witnesses.’ (Watchtower, 1 April 1972, p.197)

In 100 years of giving prophecies, an astounding fact has been revealed:  The  Watchtower has had a 100% failure rate!   Every Watchtower prophecy has been shown to be false by the passage of time.

What false prophecies have they made.  Consider the following amazing facts:

ARMAGEDDON IN 1914

Notice the following quotes from actual Watchtower writings:  “What date is set for the close of that battle (ie: Armageddon)?  ‘The date of the close of that “battle” is definitely marked in Scripture as October 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October 1874’. (Zions Watchtower, 15 January  1892, p.1353).

In 1889 the Watchtower said,  ‘we present proofs that the setting up of the kingdom of God has already begun . . . and that ‘the battle of the great day of God almighty’ (Rev. 16:14), which will end in AD 1914 with the complete overthrow of the earth’s present rulership, is already commenced.’

On July 15, 1894 they said, ‘But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble.’ (Reprints, p.1677).

In 1904 they said, ‘The stress of the great time of trouble will be on us soon, somewhere between 1910 and 1912 culminating with the end of the ‘times of the Gentiles’, October 1914.’ (The New Creation, p.579).

But the fact is that the year 1914 ended without a single one of these predictions coming true.

Charles Russell said of World War I, ‘The present great war in Europe is the beginning of the Armageddon of the Scriptures’ Pastor Russell’s Sermons (1917, p.676).

DID GOD DESTROY THE CHURCHES?

In 1917 they claimed...

Also, in the year 1918, when God destroys the churches wholesale and the church members by millions, it shall be that any that escape shall come to the works of Pastor Russell to learn the meaning of the downfall of  “Christianity”.’  (Finished Mystery, 1917 edition, p.485).

This never happened.  It is interesting to note that when this was re-printed in 1926, the edition changed this quote to: ‘When God begins to destroy the churches’?

Did the Great Pyramid grow by 41 inches in 10 years?

‘the Great Pyramid seems in a remarkable way to teach, in harmony with all the prophets, an outline of the plan of God, past, present and future.’ (Studies,Vol 3, 1903 edition, p.314).

Firstly, they say:  ‘Then measuring . . . we find it to be 3416 inches, symbolizing 3416 years . . . This calculation shows AD 1874 as marking the beginning of the period of trouble. . .’ (Studies, Vol 3, 1903 edition, p.342)

Then proven wrong by time, they claim 10 years later:  ‘Then measuring . . . we find it to be 3457 inches, symbolizing 3457 years . . . This calculation shows AD 1915 as marking the beginning of the period of trouble . . .’ (Studies, Vol 3, 1913 edition, p 342)

CHRIST'S  RETURN IN 1874 AND MILLENNIUM SET UP

‘The Millennium began in 1874, with the Return of Christ.’ (Studies, Vol 7, p.386)

After the Second Adventist hopes were disappointed in 1874, Barbour convinced Russell that Christ actually returned invisibly in 1874 (Studies, Vol 7, p.54).

How can Revelation 1:7 ‘Behold he cometh with clouds, and every eye shall see him.’ fit with this Watchtower quote?

Yet the Watchtower claims, “Surely there is not the slightest room for doubt in the mind of a truly consecrated child of God that the Lord Jesus is present and has been since 1874.” (WT, 1 Jan. 1924, p5).

To validate their claim, they further state: ‘We are not to look for Christ to be visible to human eyes when he comes again.’ (Watchtower, 15 February 1955, p.102).

ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB RETURNED TO LIFE IN 1925?

The Watchtower Society had a mansion in San Diego named Beth-Sarim (House of Princes) waiting for these resurrected prophets. It was built in 1930. Frederick Franz (the president of the Society) in 1942 wrote a book titled The New World, and it says among other things:

‘. . . and hence those faithful men of old may be expected back from the dead any day now . . . In this expectation the house of San Diego, California, which house has been much publicised with malicious intent by the religious enemy, was built in 1930, and named ‘Beth-Sarim’, meaning ‘House of the Princes’. It is now held in trust for the occupancy of those princes on their return.’ (Quoted from The New World page 104).

“Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob and the faithful prophets of old…” (Millions now living will never die, p.88-89).

The house was sold a few years later.

BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON IN 1975?

They claimed, ‘Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975, and the long looked for 1000-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly. It may involve only a difference of weeks or months, not years.’  (Watchtower, 15 August 1968, p.499).

‘A great crowd of people are confident that great destruction is imminent, which has been a major factor in their decision not to have children’. (WT, 8 Nov. 1974, p.11)

‘Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world’s end.’ (Kingdom Ministry, May 1974, p3).

MAN WILL NEVER REACH THE MOON BY ROCKET

It was claimed in 1943, that...

“Man on earth can no more get rid of these demonic “heavens” than man can by airplane or rockets or other means get up above the air envelope which is about our earthly globe and in which man breathes (‘The Truth shall make you Free’ p.285 in 1943).

It was proven false on October 4, 1957 when Russia’s Sputnik I escaped earth’s air envelope.

Can you apply the Biblical test to see if the Watchtower is a true or false prophet?  What was supposed to happen, according to the Watchtower, on the following dates:  1874, 1914, 1918, 1925 and 1975?

Did any of the above prophecies come about?’   No.  All of them failed to be fulfilled. They were all false prophecies.   the Watchtower is a false prophet (Deuteronomy 18:22). It is not God’s organisation, and it does not speak in Jehovah’s Name (Deuteronomy 18:20).

If the Watchtower is a false prophet and cannot be trusted to where shall we turn for spiritual guidance?  Not to any human organisation, but to the Bible, God’s Word as our only ultimate authority.  Re-examine everything the Watchtower has taught you. Study the Bible without their books or magazines. Don’t let a false prophet tell you what the Bible says. You must study the Bible for yourself.

III.  COME TO CHRIST FOR SALVATION

Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”  He warned us that “many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many” (Mat 24:11).

The Watchtower Society cannot save you, in fact no church can save you.  The Lord Jesus Christ is the Saviour of man.  How can we be saved?

BY ACKNOWLEDGING OUR SIN

The Bible states that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23).  We are all sinners in the sight of God.  We have all broken His laws and gone our own way.  No matter what good things we may have down, we are all unworthy of eternal life and deserve to be judged for our sin.

THE PUNISHMENT FOR SIN

The Watchtower Society says that there is no such thing as an eternal Hell.  But what does the Bible clearly teach?

Jesus said, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” (Mat 25:46)  “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:”

Who will you believe – the Watchtower or Jesus Christ?

The “wages of sin is death” (Rom 6:23) and the Bible states that “death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death” (Rev 20:14).

JESUS TOOK YOUR PUNISHMENT

Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

The Watchtower Society teaches that in order to be saved, a person must “work energetically.”  The Bible teaches that we do not earn our own salvation but that Jesus Christ earned it for us.

Look at what the Bible says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph 2:8-9).    Good works cannot save us no matter how sincere we are.  We are saved by faith alone.  “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." (Rom 3:28).

RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR SAVIOUR

“But as many as received him [Christ], to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” (John 1:12).

You must realise that nothing you can do can save your soul.  You must believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again from the dead.  Then you must acknowledge that He is Lord and God as Thomas ultimately did in John 20:28, “And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

Do you believe in Him as your Lord and God?  If so, call upon Him right now and receive Him as your Saviour:

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom 10:13).
